Care Of Magical Creatures Lesson 1

Catching sight of Harry talking to a rather nervous looking Gryffindor, Rowan smiled and gave a little wave at the boys, more to the one that Harry was talking to. Maybe he would be less nervous if he knew there were others that were kind, he wouldn't be so nervous. Her brown eyes saw Niraeya wave to her and she nodded with a smile and offered a small wave in return. Returning her attention back to Professor Carrow, she shook her head in answer to his question to all of them to show she didn't have any questions, herself. She was, however, excited for this class to begin.

Professor Carrow looked around, and decided to ignore, this once, the talking students. This was their first CoMC class, and although he knew he was intimidating most of them just by standing, he didn't want them to fear him just yet. "Very good, then we can begin," he said and then cracked his back, "Alright, who can tell me, what is a Magical creature?"

"Well a magical creature is a very broad term, professor. It can be both a werewolf, and a wizard. A witch or a troll," Malphas pointed out, "A magical creature is a creature that possesses supernatural abilities or is of a supernatural origin," Malphas then explained with a smirk. This question had always been answered by him, in the two years he had been at Hogwarts.

"Correct, Mr. Gaunt," Bruce drawled and discretely winked at his son, "Five points to Slytherin," he added, making his son grin. "So, as Malphas here explained, a magical creature is a broad term. Very true. A magical creature can be a being, a beast, or a spirit. For the purpose of my class, we will be studying beasts only. So please, give me examples of various beasts," Bruce nearly ordered.

"Centaurs," Ricky nearly shouted, "Manticores" Adrastos grinned afterwards. Harry wished to say something as well, although it was hard for him to even guess what really were magical beasts. Well, the ones that actually existed. "Dragons..." he hummed, and received a nod from Ricardo, that put him at ease.

Kain clenched his jaw and fists as the gryffindors answered and then as they got quiet he lifted his arm, "Werewolves," he growled, and Atticus chuckled, "Basilisks," and at the sound of that, the class went quiet.

Artemis smirked and looked around. ''Hippogriffs.'' She called out and grinned at Ember who seemed to grumble under her breath.

Emrys glanced at Kain as he spoke and swallowed a snicker "Acromantula" she added to the list.

The professor clapped at all the correct answers as he hid back a grin, "Correct, Mr. Shadow, Black, Costa, Moody, Miss Grimm, Calor....and Mr Potter," he drawled, that last name coming out forcibly. "Ten points to Slytherin, and Ten points to gryffindor," he grinned, and then continued, "Very good. Now, can anyone tell me, what is the rating the Ministry has given to each of the beasts your fellow students have named?" he asked, waiting for someone else to answer this time around.

"Well the scale goes from boring which is one X to five X's which is known killer" Emrys said Chase sat beside her nodding "So a basilisk would be five X's where as a worm like creature most likely a one X" Chase finished

Rowan took a mental note of all the creatures mentioned so far and picked a couple to answer professor Carrow's next question, "A Hippogriff has a XXX rating, meaning it is a creature that competent wizards should be able to deal with without much danger. Whereas a Werewolf has a XXXXX rating when in wolf form. This rating labels the Werewolf as a known wizard killer, and is impossible to train or domesticate."

Mio listened closely to the mentioned creatures and nodded slightly when two of his classmates picked some of them to name the rating to. What creatures were left again? he wondered, then said confidently "Dragons also have a five X rating, as do acromantulas and manticores. All three creatures can't be trained, but there are dragon keepers that are trained to be able to work with the dragons."

Neville swallowed heavily and he still was quite scared of Professor Carrow, but he knew the answer to this question as well and he had promised his grandmother to do well in class, so he took a deep breath.
"Erm... the centaurs have a XXXX rating, which means that they are dangerous." his voice was shaking slightly due to his nervousness, but Neville was quite proud of himself that he actually had spoken out in class. "They can only be handled by skilled wizards that have a special knowledge about centaurs."

"Very good everyone. 5 Points to Slytherin, and 5 Points to Ravenclaw. AND 20 points to gryffindor. You get extra ten, as your house has been on fire," he hummed loudly, metaphorically of course. "Now, who can tell me, why are those animals actually rated to begin with?" he asked his class.

Mio grinned slightly at being awarded so many points. They could need all of them, as Gryffindor would probably be losing quite a lot of them during their next potion lessons with his father, he thought with a sigh.

The next question was actually quite a good one, Mio had never thought about it before. "I guess, they rate them because they need some sort of classification. Then they can make it legal for people to deal with creatures with a X or XX rating, while only trained wizards are allowed to handle creatures with three or four X. Maybe also as a warning, so wizards can learn what creatures to be carefuly with or what creatures to avoid." he said with a shrug, not really sure.

David had smiled when Gryffindor was awarded so many points. That was good.. because odds were he would loose a lot of points with Snapes potion class. He had yet to answer any questions, but he planed on answering the next one, if he knew the answer. From the way Mio answered questions.. he had some competition.

Bruce clapped for a few seconds, truly liking the way everyone tried to answer. "Correct, 5 points to gryffindor," he grinned, and then looked around, "One last question," he mused, and then cleared his throat, "Lastly,next lesson, I'm bringing a XXXXX class creature to the class. Which one do you want it to be?" he asked with a grin. Why not allow the students to decide something once in a while? It wouldn't hurt, and they'd definitely be pleased.

"Lethifold!" Mio burst out before he could stop himself. He bit his lip in slight embarrassment, but stood up for his answer. He had always found these creatures immensely interesting and fascinating.
Just like a dementor, these creatures were completely dark and dangerous, but still, he couldn't help but feel the urge to see one from close up.

David was a bit late on the uptake, but decided he would give his own opinion. He rose his hand "Or a Chimaera, they look pretty cool" he was lying.. Head of a lion, Body of a goat, and tail of a dragon, that would be interesting to study. It could be the lion in him, who knows?

The smile that had been on Neville's face upon earning some points for his house quickly dropped off when he heard that they would actually have to face such dangerous creatures.
Lethifolds? Chimaeras? Why not a Dragon as well?, he thought slightly hysterically, looking between his two housemates as if they had gone completely insane.

When Rowan heard that Professor Carrow wanted to know what XXXXX rated creature they wanted to see, her face lit up. "Oh, Professor, a Dragon!" she all but shouted, nearly standing in her seat. Rowan loved dragons, and to see one would be amazing!

"Totally, I'd love to see a Dragon," Ricardo exclaimed loudly. He knew his house mates thought differently but, Dragons were so cool, he just couldn't not vote for them.

"YES! DRAGONS FOR THE WIN!" Adrastos nearly shouted excitedly.

Harry shrugged as his housemates all spoke. He really didn't have any special pick, he'd be good with any creature, although he couldn't help but be a little frightened by the idea of being next to five X creatures, now that he had learned what they were.

Hearing all the suggestions, Kain chuckled, but really, he preferred the Snape's choice, "A Lethifold sounds good," he murmured, as he leaned back in his seat.

Atticus gazed at that Shuter boy. He didn't call his attention out of nowhere, what he said did. A chimaera? They weren't that good to look at. Really, they were truly ugly creatures. BUT, they were also interesting. "Well, Chimaeras also sound neat," he added his opinion.

Malphas snorted at all the choices made by the first years but decided to not speak. His dad knew he was waiting for him to bring a Basilisk to a lesson, but he knew Bruce'd never do it. It'd not only be extremely dangerous, but extremely creepy to the young-ins. Since Mal knew he wouldn't contain himself and he'd probably begin controlling the creature.
