Potions Lesson 1 Empty Potions Lesson 1

Post by Guest Sun Sep 08, 2013 10:57 pm

Professor Slughorn finished clamping the third vial of an unknown potion in his table-top holder, thus completing his preparations for the first class of potions for the year. This was one of his favorite games to conduct at the start of term: have three potions waiting for the students to arrive and see if they know what they are.

Looking around, all the brewing stations were set up and ready for when his students would be set lose to brew up a storm. Yes, things were in order for the start of class. As he waited for his students to arrive, he went to his blackboard and began writing….

Rules to Follow:
1. Be On Time
2. Be Prepared
3. Be respectful
4. Be Safe

Professor Slughorn smiled at his four simple but effective rules that he treasured in his classroom. Other the years, he had shortened and modified them until they were just these four simple to follow rules. For 15 years, they hadn’t changed. Now all that was left was to simply wait for the students to arrive....

Lucius and Regulus entered the classroom silently, as the others were behind them. They shot a look at all the potions and Regulus smirked. Regulus jogged to Professor Horace slowly, as Lucius walked after him. "Morning professor Slughorn." He said, as Lucius took a look at the blackboard. The rules were the same as always.

Lucius sat on a chair behind a desk, as Regulus inspected the potions the professor had laid out. "We're gonna play this game once more?" he asked, somewhat excited. He had taken a liking to potions. It allowed him to do a lot...

Professor Slughorn was someone Regulus looked up to. He, Tom and Severus were those whom Regulus could go to for guidance. He always thanked them for that...

Luna enters potions with a bright smile on her face due to it being one of her favorite classes. She grins at Professor Slughorn and walks up to his desk. ''Good morning, Professor!'' She spots the unknown potions and her excitement fills her eyes. ''We're playing this game? great!'' She walks over to the far back as it was easier for her to inspect. Her head was tilted and her electric blue eyes so like Astra's stared at the potions. She had nodded a hello to Regulus and Lucius despite their hate for her and went back to the potions.

Morgan walked quickly to the potions classroom, another of her favorite classes. As she entered, she smiled, happy to see Professor Slughorn's favorite start of term games ready for another year. Glancing at the blackboard, she shook her head. The same old rules were there, but she had to admit, they were good. Simple, but good. "Good day, Professor," she said brightly, taking her normal seat at the front left.

----

Ted happily entered the potions classroom. He was, as always, thrilled with this class. "Love this game, Professor! Glad to see we are playing it once again," he said with a smile as he walked to the seat he had claimed as his for the past five years in the middle on the end.

----

"How about you move?" Vixen growled lightly to a few second years as they loitered outside the potions classroom. She was not about to be late to one of her favorite classes headed up by her head of house. Walking in, she looked at the three potions held for what was sure to be this game that she had heard about. In her first year, she recalled that they might have played this game, but she wasn't sure. "Good day, Professor," she said happily. As she walked by the potions, she took a somewhat closer look, before proceeding to an open seat. Seeing Regulus and Lucius, she gave a little wave and sat in front of them.

As Regulus saw Vixen wave at him, his face went blank for a bit. He looked at Lucius and nodded. "Cissy'll probably be here soon. Mind if I move on?" Lucius shook his head, and Regulus hopped from his chair, and moved to the table in front of it. "Mind if I sit Vixen?" he asked, smiling.

Vixen had just set out her parchment, ink, and raven feather quill when a voice met her ears. Looking up, her dark eyes met a fellow snake. "I don't mind, Regulus. Go ahead," she said with a grin, before setting her bag on the floor next to the table. "How was your summer?" she said as she pulled her dark hair back and into a low pony.

Regulus looked down on his fellow snake, sitting next to her. He left his bag by his feet, taking everything needed out. "Thanks," he responded, smirking. "Overall? Me being bored. I spent my days with a girl. But she's gone now. So I guess my school year will be even boring with all of my friends going around with their girls. Even Lucius here got my cousin. Can you believe it?" he asked chuckling, but sighing slightly, at the thought he'd only be able to see Astra at least in four months.

"Sounds about how mine was," Vixen replied. Her eyes grew wide when she heard abotu Lucius getting a girl, and not just any girl, but Reg's cousin. "Well, I'll be milling around without anyone special, too," she said with a shrug. "Being as I only got back about a month before end of term last year, not too much time for the 'romance' thing," she said making air quotes as she said it with a dark chuckle.

"Morning, morning!" Professor Slughorn said as the students filed in and took their seats. “Alright Ladies and Gentlemen, as many of you guessed as you walked in today, we are playing one of my favorite games. I like to start the year off with a little light fun, as you all know,” he said with a light chuckle. Moving to the first beaker, he said, “For those of you who haven’t played before, let me explain. Before you are three different potions, each one unique in its own way. I will tell you a little about them and you have the chance to earn pointes for your houses for correctly answering what they may be.”

Professor Slughorn looked around at the eager eyes of his students, many of whom he had had for many years. They knew the drill… He held out his hand to the suspended beaker filled with a green potion. “Here we have a potion that calls for Salamander Blood, Lionfish Spines, Flobberworm Mucus, and Honeywater. When brewed properly, this potion should be the color you see before you and the viscosity of water. Any ideas what this potion might be?” he asked looking around with a smile.

Jocelyn was a little bit in the back of the class, she didn't like potions because even though she started to study hard for it she never made a great or correct potion. She listened at what the professor had to say about a little game.

"You'll have time to get 'romance' on pretty soon," Regulus answered, making air quotes as well, and winking at the Lestrange woman in front of him. Regulus enjoyed spending time with his brethren. Now, Vixen was included.

Regulus smirked, as Professor Slughorn showed them the first potion. Quite easy to guess what potion it was with the ingredients Slughorn listed, plus the color. Regulus lifted his arm, with a light smirk. “It's the Wiggenweld Potion sir. If brewed properly as you said professor, it'll attain a green color, such as the one we can see right now in the beaker. ” he answered, letting his arm fall back slowly.

Kiara entered the potion class, she wasn't that big a fan on potions by it was a interesting subject nonetheless. she sat to side in the middle of the class and took down notes, writing down what Regulus said. Remembering there encounter in Myrtles bath room the year before she trusted his knowledge of potions well enough.

She looked back at the professor eager to see if she knew the next one.

Azaria sat next to Kiara and listened to the professor speak. Potions had always been one of her better subjects, so of course she knew most of the answers, but she didn't raise her hand. She found that being a know-it-all never went very well with her professors, so she kept quiet.

Avalon sat in the back of the class, trying to pay attention. She had the attention span of a small dog, so nothing in her classes ever interested her. The only class that she ever had any interest in was Defense Against the Dark Arts, but even then she would get bored easily. She didn't know anyone in the class either, so she just sat in the back, twirling her hair around her finger and tried to look like she was paying attention.

Professor Slughorn smiled and nodded. "Yes, Regulus, well done. 5 points to Slytherin. This is, in fact, the Wiggenweld Potion. Now, can anyone tell me what it can do?" he asked. Professor Slughorn was all for everyone getting a proper education in his class, but, he wasn't going to lie, he was proud that a student from his own house landed the first few points for the term from his class.

Regulus smirked as he gained points for his house, and at the sound of the next question, instantly lifted his arm again. He was really taking a liking to potions... "It's a healing potion. The Wiggenweld potion is commonly used to wake someone up from a magically-induced sleep. I know for a fact it is capable of reversing the effects of many powerful potions, such as the Draught of Living Death." He said, pulling his arm back once more, and smiling brightly.

Selena smirked slightly at Regulus, he always was quite sharp when it came to potions, and pulled out her writing material. Putting quill to the parchment in front of her, she wrote down what he explained about the Wiggenweld potions and then looked back up at professor Slughorn.

Maybe the next potion would be one she had seen before, or even brewed herself, Selena thought, an excited expression flittering over her face.

Kiara smiled at Azaria and gave her a silent 'Hi' when she sat beside her. She stopped a sigh from escaping her mouth when Regulus answered yet another question right away. No one else was going to get points in this class at this rate. She even knew that one to.. But nonetheless she wrote down the answer and waited for the next one.

"Excellent, Regulus! Yes, you are correct. The Wiggenweld Potion is used to awaken someone who has been put into a magically-induced sleep. It can also be used to awaken those who have drunk the potion Draught of Living Death with makes one appear dead even though they are simply asleep. Well done! 5 points to Slytherin," Professor Slughorn said as he repeated what Regulus had said in case anyone missed it.

Moving to the second beaker, Professor Slughorn smiled. “Now this next one is a potion of precision. Along with ingredients of Moonstone, Hellebore, Porcupine Quills, and Unicorn Horn, the number 7 is seen throughout the brewing technique to make sure the potion is brewed properly. When brewed properly, the potion will be pure white and give off silver vapors. Just like what you see before you,” he said holding up a black cloth so the brightness of the potion could be seen. If the students looked close enough, they could see what looked like silver wisps of steam coming off the potion. “Any ideas about what this potion is?” Professor Slughorn, said putting folding the cloth and placing it back on the table.

At hearing the explanation for the Wiggenweld Potion, she glared at Regulus. She knew that the potion indeed worked to reverse Draught of Living Death as he had slipped her some and buried her alive last term. Remus brewed that very potion for the Medi-witch to help wake her up after Sirius and he dug her up.

When Professor Slughorn moved to the second beaker and describes it, she smiled as she raised her hand. "That is Draught of Peace, Professor," she answered. It was one of her personal favorite potions.

Severus had been sitting quietly following the lesson. He knew the game professor Slughorn liked to play very well after all these years and decided to let some of the others try to answer the questions while he scribbled furiously on a small slip of paper. His dark eyes only left the parchment now and then to see if his professor was paying any attention to him; it was rather unlikely as he could just be taking notes on the potions mentioned.

"Daught of Peace is so called as, when brewed correctly it will relieve anxiety and agitation. However, for something as simple as this, the instructions must be followed exactly as written," Morgan answered. "By straying from the recipe, the potions could have ill-desired effect, such as putting the drinking into a nonreversable sleep," she added. She remembered one summer she and Severus brewed this potion and the entire thing ended up exploding. That was just one more example that reminded Morgan from then on to follow the recipe, no matter what the potion was.

Professor Slughorn nodded at Morgan's response. "Fantastic, another 5 points to Ravenclaw. Miss Prince is correct. This seemingly simple potion will ease anxiety and aggitation in the drinker, hence why it's called Draught of Peace. However, the recipe must be followed exactly as written. Any straying can cause anything from a sleep that the drinker cannot wake from to explosions. Attention to every little detail is key with this potion," he explained as he moved to the final potion.

"Now, this last potion, while seemingly simple, is likely one of the more complex and dangerous potion in a sense. It takes great care to brew this one, and when done correctly it should have a mother-of-pearl shimmer to it. The steam will also rise from it as you see here," Professor Slughorn, again held up the black cloth so the steam could be seen. As the steam rose from the potion, it formed perfect whispy spirals. "Another key feature of this potion, is it is unique to each and every brewer that makes it as well as each and every person who comes in contact with it, brewer or not. Any ideas on this one?" he asked. Truth be told, this potion was one of his favorites to play this game with. Professor Slughorn glanced around the room waiting for someone to give naming this potion a shot.

Regulus snickered as Morgan received points for her two correct answers. You don't want to play this game with me! He thought, as he clenched his jaw and heard Professor Slughorn explain the properties of the last potion. As he explained that it was different for everyone, Regulus went into thought. Different. Taste was different in many potions, it highly depended on the drinker. Not many potions had something different when it came to touch. And hearing much less. Maybe the odor was what was different. Wait just a minute. There was a love potion like that...

Regulus lifted his arm once more, determined to answer even if he was wrong. "Amortentia sir. The most powerful love potion in the world. Its smell is different to everyone who smells it. That same smell depends on what the person who smells it likes. That goes from drinks, food to even people themselves..." Regulus stated, placing his arm back on the table, and waiting to see if he was correct. Or not...

Kiara resigned herself to write notes on the potions mentioned just in case for future reference as Regulus and Morgan answered the questions. The thought of a the infamous love potion intrigued her though. She had always been curious about what she would smell and she leaned forward just a little for a closer look. She thought she could smell faint aroma of fresh winter air after a snow fall, the scent of wood, and a sweet smell of cinnamon. She smiled as her thoughts drifted back to yule ball the year before..
